The research activity of SPADiCLab spans a wide range of subjects in the area of digital transmission systems. It has been historically focused on synchronization and detection theory, but it has also expanded towards coding and information theory. The principal research topics can be summarized as follows:

  • Adaptive demodulation and decoding techniques for channels with unknown parameters (phase and frequency uncertainty, fading, Doppler shift)
  • Graph-based iterative detection and decoding techniques
  • Design of spectrally- and energy-efficient nonlinear modulation formats based on information theory concepts
  • Electronic processing for high-speed optical communication systems
  • Performance limits and algorithm for data-aided frequency estimation for satellite applications
  • Multiple-antenna transmission systems and space-time codes

The current research projects focus on

  • Wideband satellite communication systems (DVB-S2x, DVB-RCS)
  • High-speed optical communication systems in fiber and free space
  • Integration of 5G/B5G terrestrial network and satellite network
