FINAL EXAMINATION AND FULFILLMENT OF TITLE
1. FINAL EXAMINATION
With the preparation and writing of the final paper, which consists of the preparation of a research paper that the candidate draws up under the guidance of a professor tutor and possible co-authors, and which he/she presents to the Graduate Committee for discussion, there is an overall assessment of the ability to apply what has been learned in the various course units.
On request, the final paper may be written in English, with an extensive summary in Italian.
This final paper, which delves into and develops a topic of an interdisciplinary nature, often chosen from the internship experience, requires the integration of knowledge acquired in different course units and the ability to bring in new developments, as well as to communicate them in a concise and effective manner.
2. OBJECTIVES
- the thesis as a moment of contact between the university, students and the world of work;
- the thesis as an evolving work: the framing of the theme should be structured within broad research projects to provide the student with an extended scope of work in which to find his or her own space for action and to allow the tutor to develop research themes through the thesis as well;
- the choice of theme: it is advisable to initially examine and discuss with the possible graduate tutor several topics, chosen from a shortlist proposed by the professor, or by the student himself.
For each topic it is also appropriate
to consider:
- the type of treatment of the topic; whether research, compilative, or project-based.
- elements of originality;
- the appropriateness or necessity of having a co-reporter (in the case of a multidisciplinary final paper)
- the availability of time and its commensuration with the 9 ECTS credits
3. EVALUATION CRITERIA
The evaluation of the final examination will be carried out by a commission composed of at least 5 members, the majority of whom must be tenured professors. The commission shall be appointed by the Director of the Department of affiliation of the courses of study.
The evaluation shall be carried out taking into account some basic factors such as but not limited to:
- the consistency with the educational objectives of the curriculum carried out
- the methodological soundness of the research
- the path of analysis of the thematic scenario addressed
- the in-depth design and/or disciplinary research
- the possible practical spin-offs and concrete applications
- the ability to synthesize and expose in the discussion phase also respecting the time given to the committee.
The final grade is expressed in hundredths.
The determination of the final grade is assigned to the Graduation Committee, which will consider the overall weighted average expressed on 110 and calculated by the Student Registry Office by weighting the grades by the number of credits attributed to the course unit to which each individual exam refers, praise and any credits recognized without a grade or acquired in supernumerary (extracurricular) do not enter into the average.
To this average, the committee may add, as a rule, up to a maximum of 5 points determined by taking into consideration:
- the evaluation of the written paper;
- a series of information on the student's graduate course: e.g. number of praises earned, foreign course, any extracurricular activities etc.
Students who have served as Student Representatives in University Bodies during their studies are awarded a special mention, with an annotation of the same in the Diploma Supplement.
Honor may be awarded upon attainment of a score of 110 to candidates whose final paper has had the highest possible grade (5 points). Honors shall be awarded at the discretion of the committee by unanimous vote.
As recognition of the academic degree recognition, i.e., the organization skills demonstrated by the Candidate during the course of his/her studies and the commitment to follow the expected pace of teaching, an additional 1 point shall be awarded for the achievement of the degree by the fall session (September and December sessions) of the third academic year since enrolment in the Degree Course.
